Harlow & Thistle

Happy New Year! Well it's that time again, time to pick out my New Years Eve pyjamas.  Just kidding, I'm wearing them already. As another celebration is dulled by the pandemic I'm lightening the mood and ringing in the new year with some 2022 Interior Design Trend predictions. Read on and remember, if there's anything these past few year has taught us, it's that predictions are just best guesses, anything can happen. Here are some home decor trends for 2022 that are definitely worth taking a second glance.

1. Conservatory Revival
These traditional glass rooms are making an official comeback. The need to incorporate more of the outdoors inside is another silver lining of the pandemic. Spending so much time in-doors has us wanting to expand out living spaces and further blur the indoor and outdoor lines. While conservatories are similar to greenhouses in that they can grow plants, they are different in that they are for enjoying an additional living space. Today's modern conservatories have evolved to include sleeker lines, more flexibility and solar panels. We can't wait to see how this trend plays out in 2022 and beyond.

2. Biophilic Design
The conservatories in Trend #1 and Biophilic design go hand in hand. The art of connecting your interior with the exterior will be a big focus in 2022. This year we will be seeing biophilic design entering our homes in the form of large potted trees, indoor food gardens and living plant walls to name a few. This is way beyond your simple herb garden. Get ready to see this trend to germinate for years to come.

3. Table Lamps Everywhere
Perhaps it's the fluidity of people working from home turning their dining tables into desks and vice-versa but in 2022 we'll be seeing table lamps popping up in unexpected places in interior design. Layering lighting options is always a key component of well designed space but this trend is more about the look that than the function. Look for table lamps in kitchens, dining rooms, bathrooms, they'll show up pretty much anywhere in 2022.

4. Monotone wood
In 2022, we will be seeing monotone wood tones from the ceiling to the walls to the floors, it's the log cabin reloaded. We're looking forward to seeing this supercharged Hyge trend pushed even further.

5. Curves
This trend has been rounding the bend for a few years now. whether it be an entryway, a range hood, a closet or an island in 2022 we will see more people embrace curves and arches in their home design projects. The warmth and coziness that curves bring to a home are set to be a long standing trend.

Happy New Year to you and yours.

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the island is the aorta.  The kitchen island has acted as a space divider in our open concept homes and has created a hub for entertaining. While the island has solved for many needs it has also introduced some new challenges. For example, eating dinner beside each other rather than across from each other has hindered our ability to connect plus the height of the counter stool makes long term sitting uncomfortable. So today we're sharing a new trend in kitchen interiors, kitchen tables replacing kitchen islands. The aorta isn't leaving it's just evolving. Here are some of our favourite examples of this trend alert:

Do you need a home office but you don't have the space? Perhaps you need more than one home office now that everyone's working from home. A cloffice might be your solution. What's a cloffice? Well, boiled down to the simplest terms, a "cloffice" is a home office in the closet (with a lot more flair and function than it sounds). In our 2021 design predictions we hinted at the evolution of the home office and the cloffice is the perfect example of this trend. The cloffice makes it possible for anyone to have a home office no matter the size of their space. So let's come out of the closet and explore some of the best cloffice ideas on the web.

Are we all happy to be done with 2020? Last year brought us a lot of change, uncertainty and expanded our definition of "home". With many of us working remotely, the home became more than just a roof over our head, it became our safe haven, our all inclusive vacation, our daycare and workspace. This change in lifestyle also made us look at how our homes function and how they make us feel. We realized what works, what doesn’t and the impact it can have on our life overall. The ripple of 2020 will be felt for years to come so let's look at how this ripple will impact interior design trends in 2021:

Delight your family this holiday season with a beautiful and savoury charcuterie chalet on your Christmas table. This gingerbread house alternative is all the rage right now and in partnership with Kitchen Stuff Plus we're jumping on board to share our take on this salty treat. Admittedly our charcuterie chalet is a little light on meat and a little heavy on the cheese however we plan to use this chalet as a centerpiece on our charcuterie table so we wanted to elevate it a bit. We love the A-frame cabin shape, it adds a modern touch and is easier to make. Here's how to make a charcuterie chalet:

Plaster brings back memories of my days in Art class, creating molds, casting them and revealing the outcome a few days later. Unlike my bubble filled sculptures from Art class Plaster is having a potentially long lasting moment in Interior design. The crisp white colour adds to a minimalist look yet the dusty soft texture still keeps things warm. Plaster can take your space from California cool to Scandi chic and back again. We're especially loving plaster furniture, plaster accessories and plaster wall treatments. Here are some examples of this plaster trend alert:

Today we're talking all things mad apple, I know, it sounds like a cranky granny smith but did you know "mad apple" is another name for eggplant? Who knew!? Ah the eggplant, so many names so little time. Honestly guys, you could rename it crazy good cake and I still wouldn't eat it (opps is my childhood food pickiness is showing?) In any case, eggplant may not be the best thing to eat but it is a colour trend popping up in interior design again. We're talking 50 shades of mad apple; the deep purples and reds of this shade range always evoke such a sense of fall and coziness, like slowly sipping a big glass of red wine on a rainy night. Let's explore the various ways we can incorporate the colour trend of Mad Apple into our home.

Mad Apple, or eggplant, can take on many different shades throughout the day just by the light hitting it and changing it's deep dramatic hues. Pairing it with dark greys or fluffy golden wheat is a sure fire way to find success with this colour trend.

So here's our take on the mad apple trend; deep floral wallpaper, eggplant pouf chairs, wine colour accents with the occasional gold and mahogany accessories to pull the space together.

How to Incorporate the Look:

An easy way to incorporate this look into your home without completely making over your space is to add a few deep wine accent pillows or throws. Also, with the holidays coming consider toning down the reds to these deep warm hues of the the mad apple. You'll be sure to have a very mad apple holiday!

Well the decade has come to an end. It seems like yesterday I was sitting with my parents watching 2020 and now here we are. The 2010's brought us white kitchens, grey, grey and more grey, buffalo plaid and herringbone. I can't wait to see what the 2020's have in store. Today I'm sharing some 2020 Interior Design Trends that could potentially make their mark on the next decade.
2020 Interior Design Trends

1. Rounded Edges:
This trend begin making waves in 2019 and we will really see it reach it’s rounded peak in 2020. Curved edges evoke a sense of calmness to any space which is why we will see these curves in built-ins, doors, furniture and even on island counter tops. Curves and arches are a great way to add calmness and warmth to a space.

2. Textured Wall Treatments:
In 2020 we will see a resurgence of faux wall treatments, yikes I know, but they will come back more subtle and refined less spongy and blotted. We'll see Venetian plaster and stucco skim coats. These frescos will add texture, depth and give any room old world charm.

3. Hickory and Other Brown Tones:
The dark muted tones of the Hickory stain will be a big hit in 2020. Serving as the anti-thesis to the popular light wood of late, the earthy browns of Hickory in a matte finish will add drama and help ground any space.

4. Sustainability:
This will continue to be a big theme in 2020 and beyond. It could be the biggest trend of the next decade. The options and price points for sustainable pieces and textiles have come down in the past few years allowing the most budget conscious consumer to search out sustainable pieces. In 2020, to combat the growing popularity of fast-fashion in interior design, sustainability and reuse will be an increasingly important consideration in home furniture purchase decisions. We will be seeing the popularity of used furniture and accessories, and not just antiques, growing each year.

5. Zellige TerraCotta Tiles:
We caught these tiles making a mark in 2019 and we will continue to see this trend soar in 2020. Zellige TerraCotta Tiles (also known as Moroccan Tiles) have popped up in bathrooms and backsplashes. Their nonuniform shape and colour are the perfectly imperfect compliment to the wabi sabi fad.

Whether it’s a hanging planter filled with faux geranium foliage, or succulent centerpieces on your patio table, decorating with artificial plants outdoors is a big trend this season. I jumped on this trend during my One Room Challenge reveal last week, all the plants on my patio are artificial - can you believe it? Today, in partnership with Décors Veronneau, I’m excited to share a few ways you can incorporate faux plants into your outdoor space.

Consider using a privacy fence panels, covered in artificial foliage to create the perfect privacy screen! These trellises can be installed right on your fence, or even on an outdoor banister. Since they’re expandable, you can adjust their size to your needs. Growing your own living wall or privacy ivy could prove to be challenging but this fence panel is the perfect alternative to get the look without the maintenance. In my space, I used this fence panel to add texture and greenery to the walls of my patio and adorned it with a few empty frames.

Hanging arrangements are another great way to incorporate artificial greenery into your outdoor space. Often real hanging plants can be finicky and can get scorched by the sun. Faux hanging arrangements are the perfect alternative, all the beauty without the stress. Pro tip:  weave some twinkle lights through the artificial hanging plants to create a cozy, romantic atmosphere.

Lastly, using faux arrangements on your table is a great way to have greenery outside without the insects that may be attracted to the real thing. Perhaps a succulent centerpiece or something more colourful, the possibilities are endless. And while real outdoor plants usually require a lot of nurturing, artificial plants only need a bit of sunblock spray to keep them looking like new all season long.

Adding the finishing touches to your outdoor decor with outdoor artificial plants is sure to be a hit this season and for years to come!

I was at a bit of a standstill during Week 2 of the One Room Challenge (due to weather, such is life when you select your patio to makeover). So with that I've decided to share my Top 5 Outdoor Trends of 2019 instead of a full room update. My trend report was recently quoted in a Toronto Sun article titled "Embracing Outdoor Living" so I thought I'd share the full list here.  Here we go.

ORC: Top 5 Outdoor Trends 2019

Top 5 Trends to Bring your Backyard to Life

1. Light up the Night
Outdoor lamps and hanging pendants will continue to be a big trend in outdoor living in 2019. As with our interiors, we will layer our lighting outdoors to have various options for different times of day or for our different moods. Perhaps a drum shade over head while eating dinner or lamps flanking the outdoor sofa while curled up with a glass of wine or maybe pendants hanging from the trees for a romantic retreat. However you spend time outdoors lighting will be an essential part of it.

2. Retro Furniture with a Textured Twist
Minimalistic and uniquely designed wireframe furniture from days gone by will make a comeback in 2019 (like the vintage Woodward wrought iron set below). We will see it revived on it’s own, styled with a contrasting material such as fur or sheepskin or intricately woven with fabric between the rungs. A skinny metal side table or metal plant stand would be an easy way to incorporate this trend into your space.

3. Living Walls
Vertical gardens of uniquely patterned moss or climbing ivy in a deliberate criss cross pattern are a few examples of how living walls will make a big splash in 2019. Watching them develop throughout the season will be an exciting focal point and conversation piece in any outdoor living space. Plus, there are artificial versions available for those who want the look without the upkeep.

4. Painted Patio Tile
As is often the case, great indoor trends often makes their way outdoors a year or two later. The same is true for the trend of cement design tiles. Colourful design tiles that have exploded in interiors recently will make their way onto our patios this season adding interest and pops of colour. A great way to get this look for less is to try a faux painted tile on your existing patio stones or cement pad.

5. Hanging Daybed Swing
The porch swing all grown up. The hanging daybed swing is probably the most comfortable outdoor trend of 2019. Perfect for reading, cuddling on a summer afternoon or taking an afternoon nap. We’ll be seeing these suspended beauties  with loads of pillows and blankets. Honestly with a piece like this in your outdoor living room you may never come inside.

In 2018 we saw a lot of exciting things in Interior Design. In 2019 we will see a flood of unexpected trends, everything from the 90's to canopy beds. I was recently quoted in a Style at Home article regarding my 2019 Interior Design Trends forecast and I thought I would go into more detail below:

1. Big Brass
We've been riding the "gold" wave for the past few years but in 2019 brass will take the reins. The muted tones of this metal add elegance and class to any space. Seeking out vintage pieces is a great way to incorporate this trend into your home.

2. The 90's Are Back
90s trends have exploded in the fashion world and in many ways have been simmering in the interior design world for a few years. In 2019, 90s trends will have agency in interior design and, as with previous revivals, will come back fresh and inspired; we’re talking chintz florals, hollywood lighting, deep veined marble, chunky valences and puddled curtains - it’s all headed our way in 2019.

3. Take It To The Max
In 2019 maximalism will be a fair-weather trend, not for the faint of heart. With bold unabashed layering of prints, styles and eras the juxtaposition of the unexpected is at the heart of this trend. Throwing the rule book out the window giving credence to repetition and excess. We will see florals on florals, tartans on tartans, stripes on... well you get the idea. Plus, metals of different eras, an abundance of accessories and a focus on surfaces rather than storage. This wall to wall, floor to ceiling trend is expected to make a statement in 2019.

4. Wowzo Terrazzo
This composite marble is going to be big in 2019. You may remember it from the floor in your high school back in the day. Today's terrazzo will vary in size, colour and shape and will be used in floors, countertops and accessories. For an easy way to add terrazzo into your home check out these DIY terrazzo plates I created last month.

5. Canopy Beds
Renaissance canopy beds will be an unexpected micro-trend. They are turning heads and slowly making their way into our master bedrooms. We’re seeing these beds fully enclosed or with box-like crown canopy's adorned with ornate passementerie and curtains.
