Harlow & Thistle

Valentine's Day is coming up and I thought I'd post a little gift guide for the home decor lovers out there (let's be honest, I'm giving some strong hints to my husband). To be really really honest, we don't usually buy gifts for each other for Valentine's Day but with the past two years we've been going through we've really been trying to celebrate everything an anything - just to keep things exciting,

It's not a box of chocolate, it's better! It's a blog post full of red and pink interior design (our favourite Valentine's Day treat). While it's often difficult to design a room with red or pink these rooms prove it can be done with panache and elegance. Enjoy the eye candy!

Do you decorate your house for Valentine's Day? In the past we haven't but this year, since we're all stuck at home, we thought we'd decorate a bit for cupid to break the monotony. Today we're sharing a DIY heart wall hanging. We love this Valentine's Day decor craft because it gives a subtle nod to Valentine's Day without being overly cheesy.

To get started you're going to need some pink yarn, a branch and hot glue. If you're like me you have this lying around the house. Now, get comfortable, you're going to need approx 50 tassels. This isn't as time consuming as the tassel lamp shade we made last summer but it still takes time so plunk yourself down in front of Netflix and plow through it. We've made these DIY tassels many times on the blog so be sure to check out those tutorials.

Then we laid out the tassels in the shape of a heart and hot glued the twine onto the branch. We added an additional layer of tassels after this photo to create more of an ombre effect.

The other day I shared 3 Valentine's Day Gift Baskets Ideas for him so today I thought I'd share something you both can enjoy, Breakfast in Bed. Who doesn't love breakfast in bed? Honestly I'm not even sure my husband will be home the morning of Valentine's day so I might just do this for myself. It's so cozy and takes me back to my days of sleeping in (whenever that was).

With Valentine's Day right around the corner I thought I'd share 3 Valentine's Day Gift Basket Ideas for him. Whether you have a boyfriend, a husband or a partner, these custom gift baskets make the perfect gift when paired with a complimentary gift card.

The Handyman Valentine's Day Gift Basket
The first gift basket is for the handy-man (errr handy-person). I've included a can of craft beer, some tools like a screwdriver and a package of muscle rub. Ideally this basket would be paired with a gift card for a hardware store or home goods store.

The Gamer Valentine's Day Gift Basket
The second Valentines Day gift basket is for the "gamer" in your life. Whether he watches sports, plays video games or poker with the boys this one is for him. It includes some potato chips, pepperettes, poker chips and my favourite part is a mini can of orange crush for that cute play on "having a crush on you". Pairing this one with a video game gift card would be perfect.

The Hygge Valentine's Day Gift Basket
Finally this third basket is for the man who likes to be pampered. This one is themed around Hygge and includes all things cozy and natural like a candle, succulent, comfort tea etc. A gift card to the spa would be a perfect accompaniment.

Hope you enjoyed these Valentine's Day Gift Basket ideas. Just something fun to put together last minute.

Well, it's that time of year again, time for candy, chocolate and love, it's Valentine's Day! Not a huge deal in our household but I do like to decorate our table (even if it's just a regular dinner). Here is my modern Valentine's Day table I created for this year's dinner. I'm love with these dishes! They were a sweet find at my local thrift store. I think they will be my new staple dishes for Valentine's Day moving forward (heck I'll probably use them for Easter, Mother's Day, my Birthday, Flag Day... you get it, I like them).

So, this is the first year I learned of "Galentine's Day",  a girl party the day before Valentine's Day - 'Hoes before Bros' people! I cannot tell you how much I wish this was around when I was single, it would have taken the sting out of "Single Awareness Day" (aka Valentine's Day). I love Parks and Recreation so I'm not sure how I missed this. In any case, I think it's hilarious and amazing - thank you Amy Poehler!

I will be celebrating Galentine's Day with my girls this weekend and thought I'd put together a cute little 'Galentine's Day" table for the occasion. PS - I will also be using this for a Valentine's breakfast for the boys (sans the wine glasses of course).

I made these heart placemats using plain oval heart placemats from the dollarstore. I just cut them into a heart - that's it. Probably the easiest DIY I've made on this blog.

I dressed up the table with some floral napkins, my marble chocolates and my gold cutlery (this was the most amazing Christmas present from my husband - he got them at Homesense).

I wish I had found my champagne flutes but the wine glasses will do.

This past Christmas I received two marble cheese boards as gifts and I was so excited! I love anything marble which is why I decided to create these marble chocolate hearts for Valentine's day.

The typical method to make marble chocolate is to mix white and dark chocolate together, in this case I used white chocolate and swirled in some black food colouring to create the marble veins. I think it looks a lot more realistic.

Here are the things you'll need to create these marble chocolate hearts for your Valentine: white melting chocolate, black food colouring, hearts mold and toothpicks.

I melted the chocolate in the microwave (30 second intervals, mixing in between).

Then I dipped a toothpick into the black food colouring and swirled it into the white chocolate (be careful not to over-mix).

I filled up the mold and gently tapped it to release any bubbles.
Then I put it in the freezer to set (about 15 min).

I popped the chocolate hearts out of the mold and they were perfect!

These marble chocolate hearts would make a perfect Valentine's Day gift!

As a fun Valentine's Day treat my son and I decided to make some chocolate covered strawberry pops. I learned a lot from this DIY, mainly don't let your toddler be in charge of the crushed cookie (yep, I'm still sweeping). The other things I learned include using the melting chocolates instead of chocolate chips and using the microwave to melt the chocolate instead of the stove.

Drizzle some white chocolate or sprinkle with the cookie crumbs.
Put the pops in the fridge to set for 15 minutes. Replace some sticks if necessary.
