Harlow & Thistle

Canadian Thanksgiving is right around the corner and since I've been a bit MIA on the blog I thought a good Thanksgiving post would get me back into the swing of things. Nothing lifts my end of summer blues like the excitement of creating a warm and cozy home for Thanksgiving. Here are few pics of my home and some fall decorating ideas for Thanksgiving.

Fall Decorating Ideas Neon Sign

Thanksgiving Fireplace Decor:

The fireplace in our sitting room is just a mantel so it opens the door to a lot more possibilities when it comes to decorating (it's also often more challenging). For this years Thanksgiving I decided to get a foam core board and fill it with wheat, grasses and faux palm leaves. I repeated this decor in a bit of an arch above the fireplace. I picked up some neon light wire from the dollar store to create this great Thanksgiving neon sign. Finally I adorned the entire fireplace with fairy tale pumpkins and cozy textures.

Fall Decorating Ideas

When it comes to decorating for the holidays I like to shop my home first. It's always fun to find things around your home and think up new ways to use them in decor. For example, I love gathering oversized greens from my backyard and placing them in large pots and vases around the house.

And this is a shot of making banana bread. We love banana bread all year round but especially in the fall.

On our run the other morning, my husband and I ran past a house with a decorated carport tent on their driveway. I immediately knew it was set up for an outdoor thanksgiving. What a brilliant idea! So, thanks to my unknown neighbourhood muse, I've decided to pull together some outdoor Thanksgiving essentials during social distancing.

Outdoor Thanksgiving Essentials: During social distancing

#1. Carport Tent: As mentioned above a carport tent is a great way to celebrate the holidays outdoors with your loved ones while being able to keep your distance and tackle the weather.

#2. Outdoor Heaters: I feel like an outdoor heater is a good investment right now because the winter is coming and who knows how long this social distancing is going to last.

#3. Separated Seating: You may already have a few chairs and bistro tables on hand so pull them out and spread them around your yard or driveway. Don't be afraid to pull the ones out from indoors as well.

#4. Basket of Blankets and Toques: Have a basket of blankets, toques and mitts on hand for your guests and family members. Everyone has a different level of chill so it's a nice gesture to have a warm blanket at the ready.

#5. Cute Festive Masks: You can pretty much find masks anywhere these days and since it's something we have to live with we might as well have fun with it.

Don't forget your Yeti, biodegradable paper plates and Thanksgiving decorations and then you're all set. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

This year for Thanksgiving we will be missing out on the traditional Thanksgiving dinner with the family so I decided to host a Thanksgiving brunch. Of course, I wouldn't be me if I didn't make a cute Thanksgiving table for brunch complete with a hanging centerpiece.

I had a bit of material left over from when I recovered my dining chairs so I decided to make a few matching napkins for the table. I love these stripes and I'm a sucker for coordination.

As usual I picked up a few things from the thrift store (well actually everything on the table; the pitchers, the candle sticks, the wicker baskets, the apple basket, the vase etc). I think I'm getting to the point where thrifting is my new retail therapy. There's something so nice about reusing mismatched items in an unusual way. Check out some of my thrifting tips here.

The hanging centerpiece is a branch from the oak tree in my backyard. I suspended it to the ceiling with fishing line and packing tape (if you try this be sure to test the ceiling first, sometimes the tape can rip the paint off eek).

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for so many things.

It's officially fall so I think I'm safe to post this (I know some people get their knickers in a knot when bloggers prematurely post pumpkin spiced stuff). We moved into a new house at the end of August and before we moved I did test run of my Thanksgiving table. I did a test run because half my kitchen supplies were headed to storage during the move and I wanted to ensure I could still have a thanksgiving dinner with a limited assortment of serve ware. Luckily we partnered with Kitchen Stuff Plus as part of the Modern Handmade Home Series and they have a whole slew of 'oven to table' bake ware that cut my required pots and dishes in half plus they're so pretty they also make a lovely thanksgiving table setting (no need for more decor).

I kept the table setting very loose and organic, no formal napkin folds or anything. My son loved helping, he always has great ideas and isn't afraid to tell mommy when something doesn't look right.

Kitchen Stuff Plus has a 10 pack of dish towels with great patterns and colours. I used them as pot coasters and napkins around the table. The Tuscana Fluted Bakeware from KSP has a wonderful vintage feel, especially the onion soup bowls and they pair well with KSP cutting boards, Italian glass wear and marble platters. I loved how this all came together.

I recently had the pleasure to attend "The Art of Entertaining" Homesense media event. The space was so beautifully decorated I wanted to move in. Each room had a different vibe and there were little vignettes displaying holiday decor for Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas. There was so much eye candy I had a hard time staying focused. And the cinnamon rimmed cider Prosecco was icing on the cake.

After I posted some Instastories, a few of my American friend's messaged me wishing they had a Homesense in the US (add Homesense to the list of reasons to be a proud Canadian). Check out the pics below to see what's in store for @homesense this fall/winter season.

I drop by my local Homesense on the regular so this event was a real treat for me (especially sans kids). With the holiday season just around the corner it was inspiring to get ideas on how to entertain without spending a fortune.

Until next time!

Are you on the hunt for some DIY fall decorating ideas? Well, I've joined up with two other bloggers to share some simple and modern DIY fall projects for your front door. After you're done checking out my DIY Fall Wreath below be sure to hop on over to Kate from Emmett's ABC's and Erica from Anna Georgianna to check out how they're making their front door fall ready.

Modern Fall Wreath for Halloween - Harlow and Thistle

I bought these plastic pumpkins from the dollar store and spray painted them various shades of black and grey. I then tied some yarn onto a dream catch ring using the technique from my DIY Yarn Wall Art post and cut the yarn in a straight line. Finally, I used the glue gun to adhere the pumpkins to the ring. It's a pretty simple and small DIY but it looks super cute on the door and will probably last me until Halloween.
