Modern DIY Dollhouse

Do you have a nostalgic love for dollhouses? When I was little I loved making dollhouses and I loved making dollhouse furniture out of anything and everything (no joke, I use to make side tables from those white plastic pizza savers). I had a few pieces of real toy furniture but I really preferred to make it. I suppose that's where my love of DIY and Interior Design started. When my boys were small I built them a DIY play kitchen from scratch, needless to say I had more fun making it than they did playing with it and I eventually sold it online. Today I'm sharing another DIY bucket list project, my Modern DIY dollhouse (no, my boys didn't play with this one either but we passed it onto a family friend so it'll get some use).

To start we purchased this rattan shelf from an online swap. I loved the crisscross pattern on the back (if I were to make another one I would paint the back ground all the same colour to make that crisscross pattern look like molding). Once I had the structure I started to gather supplies to make the furniture.

We picked up most of the items at the dollarstore; wood dowels, small wood pieces, mirror, beads, wire, string etc. They even had these adorable amber medicine bottles. I suggest having a plan before you go shopping other wise you may purchase a lot of things you don't need.

For the DIY dollhouse bed, weused the small dowels to make a headboard, Popsicle sticks to create the frame and painted the whole thing white. For the linens, we used some scrap fabric and sewed little pillows and a mattress stuffed with cotton balls. You don't need to be an amazing seamstress to do this (it's just sewing a square really). If sewing isn't your thing you could use hot glue.

For the DIY dollhouse stove, we used a small box we got from the dollarstore as the base and used Popsicle sticks as the backsplash. We free hand painted some small wood pieces to create the range door and stove top. We used a plastic bottle cap for the sink and made the faucet with some clay. Oh yes, and we created the most adorable roll of paper towel from a smaller strip of paper towel.

Finally we made a few accessories, like the tassel pendants, twine rug, dried palm leaf chandelier, wheat plant, pillows and side tables (made these out of clay this time).

I love the way this turned out, it makes me want to be a kid again. I truly believe if you want to do something you should try it. Some people get a high out of jumping out of an airplane, I get my kicks from making cute stuff, ah the world is a diverse place.  Let me know what you think in the comments below.
