One Room Challenge Fall 2018 - Week 3: DIY Range Hood Cover

by - 04:00:00

Hello, hello, welcome back to another crazy week of the One Room Challenge. I'm still holding on strong. This week we had a lot of progress and I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We installed the counter tops, sink, faucet and a fun DIY range hood cover - which I'm super excited to share with you because I made it for under $250.

If this is your first time here, thanks for stopping by, I'm in the middle of a kitchen/dining room makeover. As background, we're renovating this cute little mid-century modern house to eventually put it back on the market for a first time home buyer. In saying that we’re very cost conscious when it comes to the appliances and other materials. Last week I discussed my tips for designing and installing an Ikea Kitchen and in Week 1 I provided some unbelievable before pics along with my ultimate plans.

Since we're doing this renovation on a budget cost is our key factor. When sourcing for inspiration I fell in love with this range hood cover from Design Loves Details however after collecting a few quotes I realized it would cost me almost half my total kitchen budget which obviously wouldn't work. So before I decided to go down another route I tried to figure out if I could build it myself (you know me, always trying to achieve lux for less).  I'm super excited to share this one with you because I made this wood range hood cover for under $250 (including the vent insert).

DIY Range Hood Cover:
I was lucky enough to find a 30" Sektion wall cabinet in the Ikea As-Is bin for $35 (30" is the width of my stove so I knew this would be perfect). I cut a hole in the bottom of the cabinet with my jig saw to install the vent insert. I also purchased an Ikea cover panel for the front (turned it on it's side to fit the width of the wall cabinet) and a 6x6 piece of oak for the trim at the bottom. I cut the wood trim and screwed it on from the inside and hung the front cover panel from a hinge at the top allowing it to open for a bit more storage. Then I hung the whole thing from the wall per the cabinet instructions and hooked up the range vent. That's it!

We also installed our Blanco Silgranit sink. The Silgranit material is super durable and comes in a bunch of colours. I selected metalic grey and I love the look so much. The counter-top is quartz because of it's durability and colour selection (it has a marble look).

My plumber also installed the Blanco SOLENTA Senso faucet. This faucet has touchless technology allowing you to activate the on and off switch without touching the handle. It's a really unique and practical feature (especially when you're cooking with poultry). More pics to come on this one.

Special thanks to my sponsors; Shaub and Company, Article, Hayneedle, Hudson Valley Lighting and Blanco Sinks. I'd also like to thank Better Homes & Gardens for being the media partner for this event.

Next week I will be sharing my light fixtures from Hudson Valley Lighting, the furniture pieces I selected from Article and Hayneedle and perhaps the finalized wallpaper. I'm finding it harder and harder to share pics without giving away too much.

Follow me on Instagram if you're interested in the daily progress. Some of you may have caught my Instastories on IG and know I'm on the hunt for some copper cooking pots. I've searched high and low - if you know where I can find some (inexpensively) please post it in the comments below - I'll love you forever.

Be sure to check out the other featured designers in the One Room Challenge and as always a special thank you to Linda of Calling It Home for creating this event and asking me to be one of the twenty featured designers of the One Room Challenge Fall 2018 edition.
