Gone are the days of retreating to the parlour for some witty banter and cognac. Formal living rooms are either being turned into offices or are being omitted from new home design plans altogether. Our home was built in the 70's so it has a formal living room and it's tough to turn it into anything else due to it's location in the house (although I have secret plans to install some antique doors and turn it into my office someday, ah a girl can dream). Then I painted the entire wall with this colour called Gone fishing by Digby paints. You guys, Digby paints has such a unique process, you order online and they deliver to your front door in a cute box with all the supplies. I loved the no-nonsense approach and when it arrived I got really excited to paint! The homeowners are a lovely newlywed couple who reached out to us in August to renovate their first home. The house, in it's original state, was oozing with potential and had so  many great features; nice layout, beautiful moldings, heated floors, gorgeous backyard etc (good bones as they say in the biz). We were tasked to update the whole house and give it a more contemporary feel. The original kitchen was updated 5 or 6 years ago and while it had some nice off-white cabinetry the rest of the kitchen came across yellow and outdated. There was also a bizarre pendant light that went through the bulkhead over the sink. We decided to remove this bulk head, add some floating shelves and a new artisan tile backsplash in a herringbone pattern. We updated the appliances, lighting and installed a new \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.blanco.com\/ca-en\/sinks\/quatrus-f\/quatrus-drop-in-1-0-(1-hole)-stainless-steel-brushed-finish--pdp-58.786\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EBlanco Quatrus Drop-in sink\u003C\/a\u003E with matching \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.blanco.com\/ca-en\/faucets\/urbena-f\/urbena-high-pressure-pvd-pdp-167.115\/?articleNr=403730\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EBlanco Urbena Stainless Steel faucet\u003C\/a\u003E. Updating the sink was super easy and made a big impact on the overall renovation. Blanco products are designed with innovation and quality so we know they're built to last. The original living room was mismatched and frumpy (I should preface this by noting the furniture in the before photo is not my client's). The space was long and narrow so depth in the space was at premium. The contractor, Newman Innovations, built us this amazing stucco grey contemporary fireplace flanked by vertical shiplap painted in Dolphin by Benjamin Moore. They built two reclaimed wood benches on either side of the fireplace for additional seating and storage underneath. Wall benches are a great solution to increase seating without compromising depth since benches don't require any space behind them like an accent chair. I original used them in my son's room but then we moved and they didn't work in his new room. The next tricky part was finding the right lampshades. They had to be bell shaped with a full wire frame. I searched every thrift store in a 30 mile radius and finally found these two shades. Now, they're not 100% identical but close enough for what I needed. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003ENext I ripped off the original shades. If you try this at home be sure to give the shade a good clean before ripping off the material, they can be really messy with the dust, cracking glue and what not. After I had the shades ripped off completely I spray painted the wire frame gold to match the sconce finish. Oh the tassels. I made approximately 6 tassels for each line in each row. I had 6 sides with 3 lines each so it came to about 108 tassels ... per shade! Aghh what was I thinking. My hand cramps up just thinking about it. It's a good thing these shades ended up looking cute. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EIf you're not sure how to make a tassel here are the Coles notes or you can check out this \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.harlowandthistle.com\/2016\/09\/diy-tassel.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EDIY tassel blog post\u003C\/a\u003E. Basically you wrap yarn around your hand 20-30 times, cut it, tie a piece of yarn around the middle, fold it in half and tie another piece of yarn around the top, trim as necessary. That's it! So easy, right? Now just repeat that 216 more times and your done. Last year we were living in a flip project so most of our furniture and stuff was in storage. Sadly a few of pieces of our art became discoloured and damaged while in storage.
